America and Our Rights: Guns Part II.
I originally wrote this back on May 5th, but the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Second Amendment I decided to post it here with some additions.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg of NYC has made comments recently (May 4-5th 2010) complaining about guns coming from other states to NYC, saying “ Let me close by saying: this is not about the Second Amendment. Our Founding Fathers did not write the Second Amendment to empower people who wanted to terrorize a free state; they wrote it to protect people who could defend ‘the security of a free state.’ Today, the security of our free state is being tested by terrorists." “I urge you to take common sense steps to strengthen law enforcement – including closing the terror gap – and to protect the American people from more attacks.”
Well sir you have criminals terrorizing you free citizenry and those citizens are forbidden by your progressive mind set from defending themselves with their God given right to defend themselves with the weapon of their choice. The best example of this is the Sullivan Act named after its chief legislative sponsor, notoriously corrupt state senator Timothy Sullivan, the act dates to 1911 and of course is still in force. The Sullivan Act requires licenses for New Yorkers to possess firearms small enough to be concealed, and you get these licenses from the local police of your area who have discretion to issue a concealed carry license. Now where this act gets controversial is in the fact it’s a May Issue act not a Shall Issue act. What does this mean? Simply put, even if you pass muster they can still refuse to issue a license to you. Look at the number of law-abiding citizens who have been able to get a license in NYC only about 30,000 private non-law enforcement licenses exist out of almost 8 million residents, but wait it gets even better of those 30,000 most are held by retired law enforcement, leaving close to 8,000 in the hands of citizens and taxpayers. And of those citizens and taxpayers the list reads as a list of the top of NYC people like Senator Charles Schumer, Don Imus, Harvey Keitel, Ronald Lauder, Howard Stern, Donald Trump, William F.Buckley Jr., Joan Rivers, and Robert DeNiro are just a short list of license holders past and present.
Mayor Bloomberg you talk about our Founding Fathers intentions, what they wanted was for people to have equal treatment not to have access to their God given rights by political favor, if you want to empower the people of NYC you will revise the Sullivan Act into a Shall Issue act that will force the police to issue these licenses to the law-abiding citizens of your fine city as common sense would dictate.
Otherwise you are just another one of the politicians who the people should through out, as Ray Stevens new song says “Throw the Bums Out!” the only thing your interested in is your own power.
To finish up, from what I have read about, of, and from the Founding Fathers I personally think they are fine when we want people with a criminal record (who hasn't been pardoned, cleared of the convection later, or had their rights reinstated) are restricted from getting a gun by background checks but not restricting law abiding citizens.
Also why do you progressives think that five thousand pages of laws are going to stop a thug from getting a gun or weapon if they have a long rap sheet they have already proven they don't obey the law, it's like throwing rabbits in a lion's den with five thousand pages of laws forbidding the lions from eating the rabbits and then blocking the entrance, all you do is stop the rabbits from escaping making it easier for the lions to have an easy meal. By the way you can trust me on this one as someone who keeps frogs and reptiles as pets when I put in their live food its like lambs to the slaughter.
Only in the human world you take the ability of the law abiding citizen from being armed against thugs which most often have proven they have no respect for the law, worse of all in big cities like New York and Chicago the Police are often several minutes away if they even get the call in time leaving the thugs plenty of time to do their evil deeds and get away. Progressives seem to live in an alternate universe where magic words printed on paper actually makes thugs follow the law and evil doesn't exist, but unfortunately we live in the real universe where evil exists and keeps coming back like a cockroach on steroids forcing us to be forever vigilant, ready to fight it when it returns.
